Mukuru classroom [1]
Taken in 2001, before free grammar school education was mandated by the new president of Kenya in 2002. A resident from Mukuru was able to begin a school on land granted by the government. He had few resources and there were as many as 100 children in a classroom. But he believed that a poor education was better than no education. The children were so eager to learn! Now, thanks largely to AmericaShare (www.AmericaShare.org [2]), the school is much better equipped and some students have obtained sponsors to attend high school ($500/year).
